Book CoverDevon’s review of Come Toy With Me by Cara Summers
Contemporary Romance released by Harlequin Blaze 1 Dec 08

Hey, wasn’t Christmas, like, a month ago? Yeah, but I’m still catching up with stuff. Like reviewing Christmas themed romances. I don’t think readers will find the Christmas in NYC backdrop to be too intrusive. No one dresses up like Santa, and there are no nods to A Christmas Carol or It’s a Wonderful Life. I think fans of the fast moving, sexy Blaze line will enjoy this one well after the holidays.

Dino Angelis is the sort of hero romance fans will adore. A tall, dark and sexy Greek-American, he is tough, strong and competent after a long career in the navy. Dino is also highly in touch with his emotional side, having inherited a strong sense of intuition from his psychic mother. What’s not to love? Dino is strong armed by his superior into one of those “only in a romance” scenarios: posing as the fiancé of a shop owner while investigating a possible drug smuggling plot operating out of her toy shop. Raise your hand if you’ve ever had a pretend fiancé!

Dino knows from the start that this operation will be somehow significant. This feeling is compounded once he meets his fake fiancée, Cat McGuire. Cat is not as well developed or interesting as Dino, but she’s pretty and nice and has a neat job. I’d love to own a cool toy shop in the city. Their romance felt a bit rushed and out of the blue, which is usually how I feel about romances based on lust. But enough chemistry was generated for me to buy into it.

Cara Summers creates a fully realized world. There are a good number of characters, and they all play a role in the story. I liked the urban setting and holiday atmosphere. The drug smuggling subplot kept my interest until the out-of-left field denouement. That had me giggling a bit.

Ah well, the Blaze line is not meant to be romantic suspense. They are meant to be fast, fun reads, with plenty of romance and sex, and Come Toy With Me definitely fits that bill.

The Summary:
What a night before Christmas…

Rugged Dino Angelis, navy captain and special ops agent, has the family Sight. But even that couldn’t have prepared him for his hungry reaction to Cat McGuire—toy-store owner, smuggling ring suspect…and his new charge.

Only, Dino can’t believe the sexy woman under his protection is a crook. Not when she can plant a kiss hot enough to melt all his good intentions…

For Cat, Christmas is always a hectic season. But this year she’s agreed to a fake engagement, too, just to keep the family peace. It wouldn’t be so bad, if only Cat could keep her hands off her new fiancé. After all, he’s strong, he’s sexy…he’s the perfect boy toy. Or he is—until Cat discovers she’s just another one of his assignments…
